Finding the right

Rug size

Rugs transform a room with texture, warmth, and personality. While colors and patterns catch the eye, finding the right size is key. The right rug ties furniture together and balances the space.

Here’s a simple guide to choosing the perfect size for each room.

Living room

Not sure what rug size fits your living room? Focus on furniture layout, not just square footage. A well-placed rug defines the space and makes it feel open and inviting. Here are two go-to layout options:

  • OPTION 1

    Rug Under All Furniture

All furniture sits fully on the rug—ideal for large or open spaces, but can work in smaller rooms if sized right. Arrange your pieces first, then choose a rug that extends just past them, leaving 6–18 inches between the rug and walls.

  • OPTION 2

    Rug Under Front Legs Only

Only the front legs of sofas and chairs rest on the rug—perfect for smaller rooms or furniture against walls. Choose a rug big enough for the front legs of main pieces, with space around the edges to keep things airy and balanced.

For both options, aim for a rug that’s 6-8 inches wider than your sofa on each side.

The Key to Getting Rug Size Just Right

When in doubt, size up — a rug that’s too small can make a space feel disjointed, while one that’s too large can overwhelm it. Aim for a size that fits most or all furniture to create a cohesive look. Focus on how the rug fits your layout, not just the room size. Kashian Bros rugs come in square and rectangular shapes, so plan accordingly.

Bedroom

Rugs add warmth to the bedroom and should center around the bed. For a queen or king, aim for 18–24" of rug beyond the sides and foot. It frames the bed, prevents tripping, and gives a soft landing. Here are two layout ideas:

  • OPTION 1

    Rug Beneath Entire Bed Area

In this layout, both the bed and nightstands rest entirely on the rug. Be sure to include the legs of the nightstands to keep them steady and avoid any wobbling.

  • OPTION 2

    Rug Not Under Nightstands

Here, the bed stays off the rug, and the nightstands sit on the floor. The rug starts at the base of the nightstand and extends toward the foot of the bed.

Keep the rug at least 6" from walls and out of walkways to maintain flow and balance.

Dining room

A rug can add a stylish touch and bring warmth to your dining room. Since the dining table is the room's centerpiece, it should be centered on the rug, with all chairs placed fully on the rug's surface.

SIZING TIP

Give Chairs Room to Move

Choose a rug that extends 3–4 feet beyond the table so chairs can slide easily without catching edges. Pull chairs out while measuring to visualize the fit and avoid trips or floor damage.

Keep rugs at least 6" from walls and out of walkways to maintain flow and balance.

Hallways & corridors

Hallway rugs add warmth and make the space feel wider. Leave at least 6" from the wall and avoid tripping hazards in these high-traffic areas.

SIZING TIP

Keeping Hallways Open and Safe

In these spaces, keep furniture legs off the rug. This improves safety and helps the hallway or corridor feel more open and less cluttered.

Keep rugs at least 6" from walls and out of walkways to maintain flow and balance.

Outdoor areas

Outdoor rugs add texture and comfort to your outdoor spaces, just like they do inside. The size of your rug will depend on the furniture and layout of the area.

SIZING TIP

Seating and Dining Area

Choose a rug that fits all furniture or at least the front legs of seating. For outdoor dining, ensure it includes all chair legs. Leave 2-3 feet around the rug for smooth chair movement.

Keep the rug 6" from walls and clear of main pathways for better flow.

Key Considerations for Sizing Your Custom Rug

Certain elements in the room can influence your rug size choice. Here are a few important factors to consider:

Doors
Make sure doors can swing open fully without dragging. If clearance is tight, consider a smaller rug or one with a lower pile.

Floor Grates
Avoid covering vents or grates. Leave at least an inch of space around them (and around radiators) for safety and airflow.

Pathways
Watch for walkways and high-traffic areas. Keep rug edges out of common paths to prevent trips and maintain flow.

Walls
Leave at least 6 inches between the rug and the wall to create a more open, balanced look in any room.

How to Measure for a Custom-Sized Rug

Before choosing a rug size, it's essential to measure your space — and trust us, it’s worth the extra step. To get started, gather the following:
  • Steel measuring tape
  • (plastic will work, but the steel kind will help with accuracy)
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Pencil & paper
  1. Finalize your furniture layout and measure both the furniture and room perimeter.
  2. Double-check your measurements, especially for custom rugs. Use painter’s tape to outline the rug on the floor to visualize the fit.
